About BGPeel
BGPeel is a free web tool that removes single-color backgrounds, such as magenta, green or white, and turns images into transparent PNGs. Images are never uploaded; everything runs inside the visitor's browser. It's built and run by one developer.
Why it exists
It started with monster art for a game. I generated dozens of monster sprites with an AI image generator, which didn't give me transparent backgrounds. So I did what many people do: generated them on magenta and removed that color.
The results from an image editor's color removal were unusable. A pink outline remained around each character, glowing characters kept a purple glow stuck to them like background, and the generator's sparkle mark sat untouched in the bottom-right corner. Widening the threshold just ate into the characters. One or two images I could touch up by hand, but not dozens.
So I wrote a script that calculates how much background color is mixed into each edge pixel, makes the pixel only that transparent, and subtracts the mixed-in color to restore the original. One rule at a time I added more: removing glows and marks connected to the background, and correcting yellows and oranges where the math tends to go wrong. It began as a Python script; BGPeel is that script moved into the browser so others can use it without installing anything.
Principles
- No uploads: background removal, resizing and format conversion all happen in the browser. Your images never leave your device and disappear when you close the tab.
- Free, no sign-up: no image limits and no watermarks. The site is supported by ads.
- One set of rules: images processed with the same settings are treated by the same rules, with sprite sets and animation frames, where results must match, in mind.
- A tool that explains itself: so you know what to change when automatic results fall short, every fine-tuning setting describes what happens when you raise or lower it.
About the guides
The guides document problems I ran into while building and using BGPeel. They're written from real AI-generated images processed with BGPeel and measured pixel by pixel. Where a test involved swapping a background or painting in a shadow, the article says so. Details that can change, such as other services' specs, note when they were checked. If you find a mistake, please tell me via Contact and I'll fix it.
